R100 Space Technology Centre – Part of Europe’s Largest Space Cluster

Project Type:Science & Research

Client:Willmott Dixon

Value:£24 million

Location:Harwell

The Facility is part of the Space Gateway at Harwell Oxford Campus, including ESA and the Space Applications Catapult. The Gateway is part of the Government's drive to capture 10% of the global space market of £400bn.

The 7500m2 satellite instrumentation, production and testing facility forms the cornerstone to the new ‘UK Space Gateway’ at the Harwell Campus alongside the European Space Agency building and the Space Applications Catapult.

The external appearance is influenced by the theme of outer space in its colour scheme and the materials used. A curved glazed elevation provides transparency and activity to the street. A series of time-line, glazed panels, monitors and digital wall within the circulation and collaborative space informs the public of the highly specialised activities within the building.

The centre comprises:

  • ISO5, ISO6 and ISO7 cleanrooms
  • Research laboratories
  • Complex clean production facilities
  • Offices and meeting rooms
  • Two 5m diameter Space Test Chambers
  • An assembly, integration and verification (AIV) control room

Role and Responsibility
