Apex Phase 2

Project Type:Science & Research

Client:University of Liverpool

Value:£35 million

Location:Liverpool

A new four storey research laboratory provides the second phase of the Apex Project. This modular and adaptable facility provides accommodation for the University of Liverpool Institutes of Ageing and Chronic Disease, Translational Medicine and a BioBank.

The facility incorporates a variety of laboratory spaces (ACDP CL 2 standard) including support laboratories, write-up, a gait analysis laboratory, planar X-ray facility and office / meeting spaces, all within a collaborative working environment.

Innovative design features include the use of modular construction to build the projecting services risers and mesh enclosures for the roof level discharge flues off site. The completed modules were craned into position on site allowing consequent programme improvements without risk to workmanship standards.

The centre comprises:

  • Circa 13900 m2 GIA
  • Break-out spaces at each floor level providing rest facilities and knowledge exchange for all users
  • BREEAM Education 2008 ‘Very Good’
  • Energy efficient mechanical ventilation designed to limit air flow to match demands
  • State of the art, low energy, variable volume fume cupboards with capacity to add additional units to suit tenants’ requirements
