FDG Completes Distribution Facility for Cummins South Africa

FDG is proud to have been included on the Cummins Inc EMEA Consultants Framework for the past eight years and has recently delivered a landmark project for the company in the form of a new regional distribution facility in Johannesburg, South Africa. The 157,715 sq ft building, which was handed over in December 2018, features office accommodation, workshops and warehouses and it sits within the Waterfall City Business Park.

Having been appointed in 2016, FDG was challenged to bring together four existing Cummins South Africa facilities under one roof – a regional office support function, a major engine rebuild plant, an automotive centre and training hub. This included new parts and whole goods logistics, customer parts distribution and significant welfare provision for 350 staff.

Set in a prominent position within the business park, the development was designed to complement neighbouring properties whilst making a positive statement of intent for Cummins in Africa as a whole. The building features two ‘zones’ – office and manufacturing – which are separated by open courtyards to reduce noise disruption but linked by bridges to allow ease of movement for the workforce. This approach produced an efficient design in terms of natural daylight and ventilation as well as providing a physical division to avoid noise pollution throughout the site.

The successful completion of the project has provided the business with a state-of-the-art facility with significant savings being made in infrastructure and in the reduction of travel between previously disparate sites.
