Co-Operative Group HQ

Project Type:Commercial & Workplace

Client:Co-Operative Group

Value:£114 million

Location:Manchester

The building's interior primarily consists of open plan space on 14 floors and can accommodate up to 4,000 staff. The building has 30,439m2 of total space.

The Co-operative group HQ offers large column free floors supported by a steel frame and three internal concrete floors.

The building’s exterior has a double skin façade with a buffer zone provided between its inner windows and outer glazed panels. This allows for greater control of heating and ventilation. Aesthetically it accentuates the curved skin and in particular the dramatically curved corners.

The building is one of the largest in Europe to have a BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ distinction. In December 2011 the building achieved the highest recorded BREEAM score, making it one of the most sustainable buildings in the world.

The building comprises:

  • 14 floors of open plan space, approximately 2694m2 per floor
  • A sustainable co-generation heat and power plant which uses bio-fuel and waste cooking oil
  • A state of the art computer system which recycles waste heat
  • Water recycling system and rainwater harvesting facilities
  • Thermal mass materials, which have a high density such as concrete, to control temperature fluctuations

Role and Responsibility
